Ice Hotel - Main Photo
Ice Hotel - Main Photo
Ice Hotel - A hotel built of ice and snow ICEHOTEL is situated in the village Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden and 17 kilometers from Kiruna, the nearest town. The heart and backbone is the River Torne flowing freely through the unspoilt wilderness. Covered with a meter thick ice layer winter time the river is the source of all our art, architecture and design. The pure water and the steady movement of the river creates the clearest ice possible. Find out more at Whole Travel, http://www.wholetravel.com/supplier/ice-hotel.

P1040696.JPG
A Smart car (right) and two Peugeot's. Dave was in heaven, and would call "Automotive Safaris" to hunt down rare and exotic Scandinavian cars and shoot them for posterity. So many frames didn't make it into this album....

Back at the hotel for our second night in Oslo. Same hotel as our first night, but a different, brand new room. Thon Hotel Astoria, Oslo.
P1040820.JPG
P1040820.JPG
We were issued temporary (red) Swedish license plates and the "S" country-code decal. Dave added the yellow "prancing moose" decal in the lower left hatch window, which is a lighthearted spoof of the Ferrari "prancing horse" and the Lamborghini "prancing bull".

Hotel Savoy room. Note the weight set hanging on the wall to the left. It also included an instructional DVD for workouts. We stared at it for awhile before falling asleep! Bizarre.

An old Volvo 480 turbo. Some foreshadowing for the C30? Almost the same color as Carol's too! In actuality, the C30 draws most of its inspiration from the old Volvo 1800ES hatchback (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_P1800) though the 480 seems to have offered some inspiration as well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_480)

Carol's car immediately after the roll-out. Leena drove it out of the "Volvo Door" and backed it into the slot for our inspection. A very exciting moment!

A storm rolls across the highway, not too far from Goteborg, and the return of the car. We got rained on quite a bit, which gave the car a nice rinse, and Carol a chance to learn about the windshield wiper system.
P1040737.JPG
P1040737.JPG
One of the handful of Police that we saw on our entire trip. No need for cops in Scandinavia.
P1050131.JPG
P1050131.JPG
The service center (serviceplats). After gassing up, you have to pull to the side of the station to wash your windows. The cabinet labeled "vatten" held buckets of water with squeegees. Odd.
P1040856.JPG
P1040856.JPG
Swedish meatballs, boiled potatoes, and bread. Lunch was delicious! Dave liked the feel of the silverware so much, he was tempted to take a "sample" set home with him. Nothing like Scandinavian design.
